PK Yonge Middle & High School

Summary

Established in 1934, P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School is a public school district affiliated with the University of Florida and located on its campus. The school serves approximately 1,150 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. This school is designed as a special school district under Florida Department of Education funding and is given the responsibility to develop innovative solutions to educational concerns in the state and to disseminate successful instructional programs to other school districts. This project was the construction of a new 75,000 sq. ft., three (3) story building that currently houses grades 6 through 12 for PK Yonge. The classrooms include eight STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Labs. The STEM labs were designed for flexibility so that the configuration of the labs could be changed depending on changing curriculums. As the MEPF engineering consultant, Moses Engineering provided design services for all building systems including HVAC, power, fire alarm, access control, potable, storm and sanitary plumbing, fire protection, structured cabling, custom classroom AV, site utilities, and natural gas. In addition, Moses Engineering provided LEED Accreditation services (Platinum), Florida Energy Code Calculations and Life Cycle Cost Analysis for applicable facility systems. The building is served by three (3) recirculating AHUs to handle the internal cooling load with three (3) 100% dedicated outdoor air units (DOAS) handling the required ventilation air. Various energy efficiency initiatives were executed during this project to achieve the desired LEED Platinum rating. The outdoor air units utilize wrap around heat pipe and an enthalpy wheel to improve the efficiency of the DOAS systems. Low-flow plumbing fixtures and LED lighting are utilized throughout the new facility. A central, 300 ton air-cooled chilled water plant was built to serve the HVAC systems of the new facility. This central plant was designed to accommodate additional buildings at P.K. Yonge School to further improve the energy efficiency of the entire campus.
